The FCAI has responded to the House of Representatives Standing Committee inquiry into the Australian tyre industry.
The submission notes that the light vehicle sector achieves a collection rate of between 97 and 98 per cent and represents a mature and effective stewardship model. New vehicle tyres account for approximately 11 per cent of annual waste and are already subject to strict ADR requirements.
The FCAI has argued that regulatory intervention should focus on specific market failures, including the off the road sector and illegal dumping, and should prioritise the development of domestic recycling markets.
In relation to Tyre Stewardship Australia, the FCAI has submitted that any move to a mandatory scheme would require substantial governance reform to ensure transparency, accountability and member confidence. Broader circular economy and end of life vehicle issues continue to be considered through the FCAI End of Life Vehicle working group.
