New Vehicle sales Up 7.6% in April 2013

Last month’s sales of new motor vehicles indicates continued strong demand, with April 2013 sales figures of 85,117 units up 7.6% on the April 2012 data according to official VFACTS data released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

The top five selling vehicles for April were the Toyota Corolla (3,504 units), the Toyota Hilux (2,932), Mazda 3 (2,842), Holden Cruze (2,290) and Hyundai i30 (2,150). Four of the top ten selling vehicles in April are light commercial vehicles, while five are small passenger vehicles, and two are locally produced.

Year to date sales in 2013 now represent 358,165 units, a significant 5.6% increase on the 2012 YTD figure. All states and territories have shown positive growth in new vehicle sales in April.

As a percentage of total vehicle sales the market shares across the categories appears to have settled with April 2013 sales of passenger vehicles representing approximately 50.3% of the total market, SUVs representing 28.6% and light commercial vehicles at 18.2%. The balance (2.8%) is represented by heavy commercial vehicles. Within the passenger vehicle sector, sales of light and small passenger vehicles still drive the volume, with total sales of around 31,000 units out of a total passenger car sales in April of approximately 43,000 units.

Overall Government purchases continue to lag behind growth seen through private and business purchasers, with Government purchase down by 14.9% (593 units) compared to April 2012, and down 26.6% or 4,540 units when comparing year to date figures. Private buyers of SUVs and Light Commercials continued strong upward trends with increases of 10.9% and 12.6% respectively in April 2013 compared to April 2012.
