Australia’s new vehicle market recorded 102,924 sales in September 2026, up 0.9 per cent from the same month last year.
Acting chief executive Dianne O’Hara said the result showed that the shift towards electrified vehicles was being sustained.
“Australian motorists are embracing a broader range of powertrains, following greater model choice offered by manufacturers and growing competition,” Ms O’Hara said.
Battery electric vehicle sales from all sources accounted for 24.2 per cent of the market in September. In September 2025, the share was 11.3 per cent. Plug-in hybrid sales rose 122.7 per cent compared to September 2025 and hybrid sales grew 20.7 per cent. Petrol sales fell by 36.2 per cent and diesel declined by 18.4 per cent.
During 2026 so far, BEVs represent 18.9 per cent of the entire market, compared with 8.1 per cent at the same time in 2025.
A 13.2 per cent decline in light commercial vehicle sales in September, compared to September 2025, was offset by 6.3 per cent growth in passenger vehicle sales and 6.1 per cent growth in SUV sales.
“The changes seen throughout this year are continuing. Many consumers are making practical decisions and selecting from the range of available technologies that best meet their needs,” Ms O’Hara said.
China was the largest source for vehicles sold in September, supplying 35.5 per cent of the market. Japan supplied 22.5 per cent, Thailand 17.3 per cent and South Korea 9.6 per cent.
