Electronic Stability Control
Accident data shows that Electronic Stability Control (ESC) can reduce the likelihood of being involved in loss-of-control crashes.
The ESC system uses sensors in the vehicle to compare differences between the car’s actual course and the driver’s steering wheel input. If the computer senses that loss of control is imminent, the system applies braking to individual wheels to bring the car back to its intended course.
The ESC system software is programmed after exhaustive tests in a variety of driving conditions. While many systems can be switched off, it is recommended that the driver leaves the system on as emergency situations can occur at any time – often without warning.
The availability and uptake of ESC systems in new passenger vehicles is increasing rapidly. A survey of FCAI members revealed that in mid 2008 more than half of all passenger cars and SUV's were equipped with ESC. In particular, the level of uptake for SUVs has been very strong with more than three out of four new SUV's fitted with ESC.
For the information of motorists and other stakeholders, the FCAI website has a list of new model passenger cars and SUV models available with ESC either as standard equipment or an extra cost option. The list is updated regularly as new models enter the market.
There are many different names for ESC - some of which are:
Electronic Stability Program | ESP |
Electronic Stabilisation Program | ESP |
Vehicle Dynamic Control | VDC |
Electronic Stability Control | ESC |
Dynamic Stability Control | DSC |
Vehicle Stability Control | VSC |
Vehicle Stability/Swerve Control | VSC |
Active Stability Control | ASC |
Other names may also be used.
The following is a list of vehicle models available with Electronic Stability Control Systems either as standard equipment or as an extra cost option. This list will be updated as new models enter the market.
