The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) President, John Conomos AO, has announced he will step down from the leadership role when he retires as Chairman Emeritus of Toyota Australia on June 30.

As a result, the FCAI Executive Committee has agreed that GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Reuss, will be appointed as the new FCAI President from this date.

Mr Conomos has served with great distinction in the role of FCAI President since 2006 and has been a member of the Chamber's Executive Committee for more than 14 years.

He was made a life member of the FCAI in 1995 and in 2005 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to the Australian automotive industry.

Incoming FCAI President Mark Reuss moved to Australia in January after being appointed Chairman and Managing Director of GM Holden. Mr Reuss was previously GM’s Director of Global Vehicle Safety and Integration.

He has worked for GM for 25 years and holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt University and a Masters in Business Administration from Duke University.

"I'm very pleased and honoured to represent the Australian automotive industry as President of the FCAI," Mr Reuss said.

"I am also grateful for the work that John has done during his long involvement with the FCAI to further the industry's relationship with government and other key stakeholders," he said.

"This is a critical time for the industry," Mr Reuss said. "The automotive industry makes a significant contribution to the Australian economy and there are a range of future opportunities and challenges that lie ahead," he said.

"I look forward to working with all FCAI members as we tackle the challenges and leverage the opportunities to grow the industry," he said.

Mr Conomos will continue to serve as a member of the FCAI Executive Committee until the next Annual General Meeting in 2009.
