Car industry endorses GCC FTA negotiations
15th December, 2006
FCAI Chief Executive, Mr Peter Sturrock has strongly endorsed the Australian Government' decision to seek free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
'Collectively the GCC countries are the largest export market for Australian-made motor vehicles. Australia vehicle manufacturers currently export more than 100,000 vehicles to the GCC countries each year, with a value of almost $2 billion,' said Mr Sturrock.
'Australian car manufacturers are exporting vehicles of outstanding quality and value to these markets. FTA negotiations offer the opportunity to further lock-in the competitive advantage that Australian vehicle exports have enjoyed in these markets' .
'We pleased that the Australian Government has taken this step and we urge them to ensure that the negotiations move forward with a high level of priority', Mr Sturrock said.
