Fuel Consumption Label

During 2007 the government reviewed ADR 81/01; Fuel Consumption Labelling for Light Vehicles to align measurement and reporting of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emission performance in line with the most recent version of UN ECE Regulation 101
and to amend the fuel consumption label to report separately on urban and extra-urban
fuel consumption.

While the industry supported aligning the ADR with the international standard, there were concerns with the regulatory development process, especially the implementation timing. With the updated ADR 81/02 the government plans to upgrade the Green Vehicle Guide
in the first half of 2008 to provide for reporting of the additional information.

To assist with meeting its targets for reduction in CO2 emissions the Australian automotive industry is committed to aligning fuel and emission standards with international standards. Australia’s fuel standards must match engine technology to achieve the best environmental and performance results. Australia must look to overseas experience to ensure that local standards are those most suitable commercially and technically.

Euro 4 emission standards will be introduced in Australia from 1 July 2008 for new models
and 1 July 2010 for all models.

The Euro 5 emission standards for all light vehicles have now been finalised in Europe and the Australian government will consider their introduction into Australia. At the earliest it would be expected that the process will begin in late 2008 with consultation during 2009.
